In the year 1333 AD, the Kamakura Shogunate, which laid the foundation for Japan's rule by samurai, is destroyed by the rebellion of its trusted vassal, Ashikaga Takauji. Pushed into the depths of despair, the legitimate heir of the shogunate, Hojo Tokiyuki, escapes the burning Kamakura with the guidance of a priest claiming to be a god, Suwa Yorishige.
Fleeing to Suwa, Tokiyuki meets reliable allies and begins to gather strength to reclaim Kamakura. In the midst of the great changes sweeping through the era, he overcomes challenges not by fighting and dying like the samurai heroes around him, but by escaping and surviving.
