Seven years have transpired since the Taisei Hokan, signifying the conclusion of the samurai era. The emerging Meiji government is fervently advocating for national prosperity and military fortification to rival Western powers. Shizuma Orikasa, once a samurai from the Aizu clan, has forsaken his sword and traditional topknot, adopting the role of a Tokyo rickshaw driver. Despite this, he retains formidable sword skills showcased during the Boshin War, while on a quest to locate his girlfriend's missing fiancé, Sumie Kanomata, using origami as the only lead.
Fortuitously, Shizuma's adeptness in thwarting an assassination attempt by high-ranking government official Tomomi Iwakura earns him recognition and a position in the newly established Police Department. Simultaneously, Kyoshiro Shurashin, a skilled one-eyed swordsman, aligns with the Yakuza Moriya-gumi, embroiled in territorial disputes in Tokyo for a specific purpose. The Moriya-gumi, involved in opium smuggling with affluent merchants, channels profits to a mastermind orchestrating a rebellion to "restore the samurai era." This elusive figure is revealed to be the puppeteer behind the Iwakura assassination.
As Shizuma pursues the government-overthrowing plot, Kyoshiro ascends within the Moriya group, creating a complex interweaving of destinies for these two individuals in starkly opposing roles. Unbeknownst to Shizuma, poignant and ironic encounters and partings lie ahead in his journey.
