The year is Tenpō 11 (1840). Amid a great famine that has thrown society into turmoil, demons have started to disguise themselves as humans and deceive people for amusement. In a mountain village far from Edo, called Kadono, a brother and sister, Jinta and Suzune, lived. Having come to Kadono from elsewhere during their childhood for certain reasons, they were warmly accepted by the villagers and lived happily together.

In the village, there was a priestess known as "Itsukihime." As Jinta grew older, he began to serve as her bodyguard. One day, while on a mission to slay demons in the forest, Jinta encountered a strange demon who spoke of a distant future.

Jinta, always close to death in his role as the bodyguard of the priestess, was sent off by his sister Suzune, who worried for him but bravely and cheerfully sent him on his way. Meanwhile, Itsukihime, fulfilling her duties as the priestess, faces the threat of being targeted by demons.

The fates of the three—Jinta, Suzune, and Itsukihime—intertwine and spiral into chaos. A great calamity involving both humans and demons will engulf not only them but the very course of history itself. From the Edo period to the Heisei era, this is the story of a demon and human journeying through 170 years of time, questioning the meaning of wielding a sword, in this grand, Japanese-style epic fantasy.
